Hortense Calisher was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1845. She was educated at the Emma Willard School. Calisher wrote three novels which were published between 1871 and 1881. They are "The Widow of Moorecroft" (1871), "The Christendom of Anne Baxter" (1871), and "The Ruby of Roodmasle Castle" (1881)
She also wrote "A Child of the Fifties" (1881), a biography of her mother, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps. Her works were characterized by their sympathetic treatment of the poor and oppressed. She died at her home in Brooklyn on May 22, 1907.
